1. Have you seen a bug that could be a bed bug?

Look for small, flat, oval insects, usually reddish-brown, around mattress seams, the bed frame or headboard.

2. Have you found dark spots around your bed?

Small black or brown ink-like marks on mattress seams, bedding or the bed frame can be a sign; other things can cause marks too.

3. Have you found shed insect skins or tiny pale eggs?

Check seams and crevices near where you sleep. Identification is important because other insects can leave similar signs.

4. Are you noticing new itchy marks after sleeping?

Bites can appear in groups, but appearance alone cannot identify bed bugs. Some people do not react to bites.

5. Have you noticed unexplained small blood marks on bedding?

Small blood spots may be a clue, but they are not proof of bed bugs.

6. Have you recently travelled or brought in second-hand furniture?

Also consider a known bed bug problem in a neighbouring property. Possible exposure does not mean you have an infestation.
